Dear New Mexicans,

Although they don't want you to know about it, school libraries across the state have many books which contain age-inappropriate, explicit content.  These are books with:

  • detailed descriptions of child rape,

  • sex acts between adults and children,

  • glorification of children using hard drugs and sex toys,

  • children engaging in cutting and suicidal behaviors,

  • excessively violent imagery, etc.

Most parents have no idea that these books are present in their children's schools. Three Progressive legislators are aiming to change the state law to make it even harder to remove age-inappropriate explicit content from NM schools.

We need to raise more awareness about this issue now, as the legislative session starts on January 20th.

In collaboration with advocates across the state, we now have five parent's guides to age-inappropriate harmful books in:

  • Albuquerque Public Schools

  • Las Cruces Public Schools

  • Rio Rancho Public Schools

  • Gallup/McKinley County

  • Santa Fe Public Schools (NEW!)

PLEASE SHARE this post with parents and grandparents, as a resource for protecting kids from age-inappropriate content. There is more info about how to get involved at the end of this post.

PARENT'S GUIDES TO EXPLICIT BOOKS IN ALBUQUERQUE, LAS CRUCES, RIO RANCHO,  GALLUP-MCKINLEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND (NEW!) SANTA FE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Exposing kids to sexually explicit and sexually violent books is harmful to kids and increases the likelihood of risky sex. We want to make sure parents know about the age-inappropriate content their kids may be provided at school, as well as how to opt-out.

To that end, our website now has parent's guides to explicit books in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Gallup-McKinley Public Schools, and  (NEW!) Santa Fe Public Schools. These booklets list the worst books in each school and provide information about opting out.

The parent's guides can be downloaded here:

Additionally, we are collecting donations to print hard copies of these booklets and flyers about this issue, which will be used to educate legislators, school board members, school admins, and community members.

You can donate to help cover the printing costs here: https://www.givesendgo.com/nmfa2026

HOW YOU CAN HELP PROTECT KIDS IN YOUR DISTRICT

Ask your local school board to adopt a book standards policy to ensure they are protecting kids from age-inappropriate content. We have a sample policy that you can share with them from Freedom Families United here:

We have a working group of concerned parents and community members who want to protect kids from age-inappropriate content in school libraries.

We need your help to illuminate the situation in districts all across the state. Volunteers can help by searching school library websites to compile lists of books in specific districts.

If you want to help, please email Sarah: concernedfornm@gmail.com.
