URGENT: PLEASE HELP - Vaccine Bill Fast-Tracked in Special Session
- Sarah Smith

- 4 min read
Dear New Mexicans,
Today was the first day of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's Special Session. Â She has included a concerning Bill that increases vaccination requirements and disconnects the NM vaccination requirements from the Federal CDC.Â
Â
NOTE: Special Sessions typically only last a few days, so this is an URGENT call for help! This Bill is being fast-tracked and has already passed it's first committee hearing.Â
Â
Will you please EMAIL all Senators and Representatives to express your concerns about vaccine Bill SB3? Â Bill summary, legislator email addresses, and potential talking points are below.Â
SUMMARY OF SB3 - IMMUNIZATION RULES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Bill SB3 Immunization Rules and Recommendations does the following:
Removes the Federal CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as an entity whose recommendations will guide state policies
Â
Instead, only the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and NM Dept of Health will be taken into account when determining the mandatory childhood vaccinations for NM children Â
Â
Adds the requirement for mandatory vaccination of young children in daycare centers (but exemptions are still allowed)
Â
Gives the NM Dept of Health the power to make recommendations on vaccinations for adults residing in the state
Â
***IMPORTANT NOTES:Â The existing state statutes already require vaccination for all school-aged children. This Bill currently does NOT make any changes to the existing statute which allows for medical and religious exemptions. There is already a state statute allowing the state to purchase , store, and distribute vaccines for all NM children.

POTENTIAL TALKING POINTS
NOTE: Your email will be most effective if you customize the text instead of copy-pasting it all directly.
Dear state legislators,
Please vote NO on SB3 "Immunization Rules and Recommendations." I am concerned that the state of New Mexico is stepping away from the guidance provided by the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).Â
Â
Important changes are currently being made by the ACIP, such as withdrawing the recommendation for administering the Hepatitis B vaccination for newborns. (Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease and therefore the vast majority of newborns do not need this unless their mother tests positive in customary screening tests.) Â
Â
Instead of politicizing this issue, the NM Dept of Health needs to be able to maintain its autonomy to make it's own determinations by considering the guidance of the ACIP along with other guidance.
Â
Additionally, I am concerned that the state is now going to require vaccinations for children in daycare centers. Â Each daycare center is already free to decide whether or not to require vaccination and the state does not need to get involved in this. Â
Â
Furthermore, the state of NM does not need to be providing recommendations for adult vaccinations. Doctors are already knowledgeable and can make recommendations based on each individual patient. Â
Â
There is no need to change our existing vaccination statutes. Please vote NO on SB3.
Â
Thank you for your service.
Sincerely,
[your name here]
